Launch notes
The flat water lagoon conditions provide ideal launch and landing zones with minimal turbulence. Northerly wind directions (NNW to NE) are consistent and predictable, making this suitable for beginners learning water entry techniques.
Gear & clothing
Gear · Use 12-14m kites to make the most of the moderate 14.3kt average wind; smaller sizes may struggle in lighter conditions. Boards should be beginner-friendly twin-tips or directional boards suited for flat-water progression and maneuver learning.
Clothing · A 3mm shorty or lightweight rashguard is sufficient year-round due to warm Red Sea temperatures (24-32°C depending on season). UV protection is essential given the strong Egyptian sun and minimal shade on exposed beaches.
Crowd & etiquette
Respect the organized school zones and communicate with instructors about traffic patterns during peak hours. The spot hosts regular group sessions, so be aware of other riders' positioning and maintain safe distances in the lagoon.
Additional notes
Abu Soma is one of Egypt's most established kite schools with reliable teaching infrastructure, making it excellent for lessons. Book accommodation and lessons in advance during peak months (May-October) as the spot can get busy with international visitors.
