Amenities

Tavarua Island Resort with accommodation and food servicesEquipment rental facilities available on the islandBoat launch services for accessing flat water zones

Hazards

Coral reefs and shallow patches in surrounding waters require careful route planningStrong currents around the island can develop quickly, especially during tidal changesLimited wind consistency with only 40 windy days per year means frequent flat spellsTropical storms and cyclone season (Nov-Apr) can create sudden dangerous conditions

Launch notes

Launch from protected flat water areas on the leeward side of the island during SE/SSE winds. Sandy beach launch preferred; check tide levels as shallow water exposure varies significantly.

Gear & clothing

Gear · Bring 14-17m kites to maximize light wind sessions (avg 8.7 kts); a 12m backup kite handles occasional gusty days. Twin-tip boards are ideal for flat water progression and freestyle practice.

Clothing · Wear a thin 2-3mm wetsuit year-round due to warm tropical water (27-29°C), but reduce coverage in summer months. UV protection is essential given equatorial sun intensity.

Crowd & etiquette

Respect the resort's private island status and any designated kiter zones. Coordinate with other water sports users (surfers, boats) and always inform staff of your session plans.

Additional notes

Book sessions well in advance as the spot has limited daily rider capacity. Monitor local wind forecasts closely since consistent wind days are rare; be prepared to adapt plans or consider alternative Fiji spots if conditions don't develop.
