About Bali / Canggu, Indonesia

Canggu works July-August when SE winds show up. Otherwise you're gambling. Mornings deliver clean conditions before chop builds; afternoons are iffy.

Amenities

Multiple beach clubs and restaurants with water views along Canggu beachKitesurfing schools and equipment rental shops within walking distanceAccommodation ranging from hostels to resorts near the launch areaLocal shops for emergency gear repairs and supplies

Hazards

Choppy ocean conditions with strong currents and sudden swells from Indian Ocean stormsShallow reef areas and rocks near shore requiring careful navigationHeavy boat traffic and jet ski activity, especially during peak tourist seasonPowerful rip currents during monsoon transitions (April-May, October-November)

Launch notes

Launch from the sandy beach sections during SE and ESE winds, which are most consistent. Avoid choppy conditions during midday heat; early morning sessions offer cleaner water and lighter chop.

Gear & clothing

Gear · Bring 13-17m kites as average winds of 7.9 kts are marginal; larger kites maximize light-wind days. Use a freestyle or wave board to handle choppy conditions, with good edge control for the uneven swell.

Clothing · A 3mm springsuit or rash guard is sufficient year-round given Bali's tropical climate; use 2mm only during peak dry season. Reef booties are strongly recommended for protection against sharp coral and rocks.

Crowd & etiquette

Respect the large beginner population and give priority to lesson groups near shore. Keep communication clear with other riders in the choppy conditions where visibility is reduced.

Additional notes

Wind is most reliable July-August and January-March; expect only 14 windy days annually so plan visits during peak season. Check local forecasts closely as afternoon sea breezes can create sudden wind shifts in this location.
