Hazards

Choppy ocean conditions with unpredictable swells and currents require careful navigation and strong swimming abilityRocks and reef hazards near the shore—scout your launch area carefully before entering the waterStrong tropical sun exposure at this equatorial latitude demands sun protectionOccasional rip currents during peak swell periods, especially in the afternoon wind builds

Launch notes

Las Pocitas has a sandy beach with choppy offshore conditions typical of Peru's Pacific coast. Launch during the strong afternoon sea breeze window (typically 2–6 PM) when winds reliably build from the SW/W directions.

Gear & clothing

Gear · Bring 15–17 m² kites for light wind days (avg 6.7 kts can be variable) and a 12–14 m² for stronger afternoon sessions. A directional or twin-tip board handles the choppy ocean swell well.

Clothing · A 2–3 mm spring suit or rashguard is sufficient year-round given the warm equatorial water temperature. Heavy-duty sunscreen (SPF 50+) is essential due to strong equatorial UV exposure.

Crowd & etiquette

Respect local fishermen and swimmers, and keep distance from populated beach areas. Maintain a clear downwind corridor and signal other water users of your intended direction.

Additional notes

Peak conditions occur June–November when trade winds strengthen; January–May can be light and inconsistent. Plan sessions for afternoon when the sea breeze is most reliable, and always check swell forecasts as large swells can make conditions challenging.
