Launch notes
Launch from sandy areas away from rocky outcrops, preferably during NNW or SW wind windows when offshore conditions are cleaner. The choppy ocean requires a confident entry; scout conditions before committing and be prepared for white water.
Gear & clothing
Gear · Bring a 14-17m kite for the moderate 9.9kt average winds; consider a 12m for stronger days when SW/SSW winds pick up. A directional or wave board is ideal for handling the choppy Atlantic swell and responsive maneuvering.
Clothing · A 3-4mm wetsuit works year-round; opt for 5mm during winter months (Nov-Jan) as Atlantic water temperatures drop to 12-14°C. Spring (Feb-Mar) offers milder conditions around 13-15°C, still requiring solid thermal protection.
Crowd & etiquette
Respect local fishing activity and share the break with other water sports enthusiasts. Stay organized in the launch area and communicate with other riders to avoid collisions in the choppy conditions.
Additional notes
Check local wind forecasts carefully as this spot benefits most from Feb-Mar swells; the 67 windy days annually are concentrated in these months. Visit nearby Caparica beaches if Cova do Vapor feels too choppy, as they offer similar conditions with more protected launch zones.
