About Ko Tao / Mae Haad Beach, Thailand
Mae Haad's tight launch demands solid technique, but NE monsoon winds Dec–Feb reward the effort. Reef and ferry traffic aren't obstacles—they're why mediocre kiters stay away.

Launch notes
Mae Haad offers a sandy launch area best accessed during NE/NNE winds which blow offshore. Choppy conditions require careful timing at launch; early morning sessions typically provide calmer water before afternoon chop builds.
Gear & clothing
Gear · Bring 14-17m kites for the 12kt average winds with a larger kite (16-17m) for lighter season days. A twin-tip or wave board works well for the choppy conditions; consider a directional board if primarily riding waves.
Clothing · A 3-2mm springsuit is suitable year-round in these tropical waters, as temperatures stay 26-29°C consistently. Reduce to boardshorts or rash guards during the warmest months (April-May).
Crowd & etiquette
Respect the significant ferry traffic in the area and avoid launching during peak boat hours. Share the water courteously with other water sports users and stay clear of fishing nets.
Additional notes
December through February offers the most reliable NE winds from the northeast monsoon season—plan extended trips accordingly. Check local weather forecasts carefully as wind patterns can be erratic outside peak season months.
