Hazards

Choppy ocean conditions with strong currents around the three islands; requires solid intermediate skillsRocky outcrops and shallow reefs near Koh Nang Yuan; scout launch areas carefully at low tideVariable wind patterns with thermal effects; afternoon winds can shift suddenly from WSW to NEHeavy boat traffic during peak season; stay aware of ferry routes and local longtail boats

Launch notes

Launch from sandy beaches on the western side of Koh Phangan facing the islands; choppy water demands a controlled entry with good edge control. Best launches occur during WSW and W wind directions when offshore winds keep chop manageable.

Gear & clothing

Gear · Bring 14-17m kites for the 11.9kt average wind speed with waves up to 3-4ft; a freestyle or wave board handles the choppy conditions better than a directional board. Have a smaller 12m kite ready for lighter wind days.

Clothing · 3/2mm or 2mm wetsuit year-round; water temperature stays warm (26-28°C) but sun protection is critical in Thailand's tropical climate. Quick-dry rash guards recommended for sun protection during long sessions.

Crowd & etiquette

Respect local fishermen and traditional long-tail boats; yield to all vessel traffic and stay well clear of swimming areas. Coordinate with other kiters to avoid overlapping launch zones, especially during peak season months.

Additional notes

Best conditions occur during the cooler months (Dec-Feb) when consistent NE/WSW winds arrive; avoid September-October when monsoon swells create dangerous choppy conditions. Book accommodation in advance during peak season as spots fill quickly.
