Hazards

Choppy water conditions with unpredictable swells and strong currents common in monsoon transitionsRocky outcrops and shallow reef areas near Lamai Beach requiring careful navigationOccasional boat traffic and fishing nets in the bay during peak seasonStrong wind gusts during transition months can create sudden pressure changes

Launch notes

Launch from the sandy sections of Lamai Beach during low tide for easier beach access. Watch for choppy water conditions and use ESE/NE winds for cleaner offshore sessions, as WSW winds can create messy chop from bay interactions.

Gear & clothing

Gear · Use 13-17m kites for average 8.8kt conditions, with larger sizes preferred during Sep, Nov, and Feb peak wind months. A directional board or wave board suits the choppy water; bring a wave-specific setup for stronger wind days.

Clothing · A 2-3mm wetsuit or rash guard is sufficient year-round due to warm tropical waters around 28-30°C; wear sun protection and reef booties for rocky areas. Consider a lighter rashguard during hotter months (Mar-May).

Crowd & etiquette

Share the beach respectfully with swimmers and other water sports enthusiasts; stick to designated kite zones away from main swimming areas. Be mindful of local fishing activities and yield to traditional boats.

Additional notes

September through February offers the most consistent wind; check local monsoon forecasts as conditions shift rapidly during transition periods. Book local guides for first sessions to identify safe launch zones and hidden reef hazards specific to daily conditions.
